Coast and Castles – Day 5

Departed: Kelso
Destination: Inerliethen
Distance: 52km
Weather: Overcast/Cold
Mood: Happy and Content
Highlight: Countryside

The wind was kind to us today and whilst there was a stiff breeze as we headed off, within a few hours this had abated. We departed Kelso by circumnavigating Floors Castle. Another lived in Castle by another Duke and much larger than anything we had seen. We clocked about 5km as we skirted the high stone wall surrounding the Castle and its gardens, but we were out of time to wait for opening hours for a full visit.

The donkey, correction… The donkey’s handler discovered that her mechanical donkey came with extra gears that she hadn’t been using! This resulted in a donkey that didn’t need walking up hills today! Yay!

We both thoroughly enjoyed the ride today which took us past a number of large estates, pretty cottage houses along the river with manicured gardens and quiet country roads flanked with thick woods full of bird life and alive with their musical chatter. We both agreed that this has been the most enjoyable along the Coast and Castles route.

We are aiming for an early night to get our strength up for the final ride up to Edinburgh where we will say our sad farewell to our trusty donkey’s!

    …and I bet she didnt know about the free set of steak knives that came with the bike as well.
    … talk about sending a boy to do a mans job!!! I blame the trainer / guide – he should have been observant enough to see she was stuck in too high a cog…… still, if you have seen him ride its lucky Jen doesn’t just fall off the other side when she gets on – due to poor instruction {you should see the bike he makes her ride back in Australia… – the tight wadd!!}
