Coast and Castles – Day 6

Departed: Innerleithen
Destination: Edinburgh
Distance: 60km
Weather: Overcast/Mild
Mood: Ecstatic (initially as per feature image)
Highlight: Conquering the hills

We weren’t jumping out of our skins this morning to mount our trusty steeds and head for the hills! In fact it was quite the opposite! Read more

Coast and Castles – Day 5

Departed: Kelso
Destination: Inerliethen
Distance: 52km
Weather: Overcast/Cold
Mood: Happy and Content
Highlight: Countryside

The wind was kind to us today and whilst there was a stiff breeze as we headed off, within a few hours this had abated. We departed Kelso by circumnavigating Floors Castle. Another lived in Castle by another Duke and much larger than anything we had seen. Weather: heavily overcast and icy with strong headwinds (The locals claim unseasonal – Yeah right!)
Mood: Determined
Highlight: Crossing the Scottish Border

“May the road rise up to meet you, may the wind be at your back” This was the blessing given to us by a Scottish lad who appeared to be the man in charge of the establishment we stayed… How wrong were those words! Read more

Mood: Under pressure then relaxed
Highlight: Lindesfarne Castle

The race was on! We were on a mission! We must reach Holy Island before the incoming tide covers the road and cuts access to the Island until much later in the day. We had until 1:30pm and 50km to cover. So let’s start with a leisurely 8am breakfast! Read more

Coast and Castles – Day 2

Departed: Newbiggin-By-The-Sea
Destination: Ambleton (via Alnwick)
Distance: 62km
Weather: Overcast/Mild
Mood: Happy (and at times not so – hills!)
Highlight: Alnwick Castle

Today we were spoilt for choice of Castles! So we narrowed it down to two, Warkworth and Alnwick. Knowing that you really need a day to do Alnwick Castle justice, we simply did a flying visit of Warkworth to spend as much time as possible at Alnwick. Read more
