Camino – Lush Beginings (Day 2)

Camino – Saint Jean Pied De Port (Day 1)

Camino – Our Camino Begins (Day 1)

Date: Tue 7th May

How fitting to Begin the Camino Frances from Paris! Following in the footsteps of fellow Pilgrims over many many centuries we symbolically visited the tower of St Jacques where many started out from.

At 4:30am, it was up and out! Final pack and down to the Metro to catch a couple of connecting trains before arrive at Gare Montparnasse for our train destined to Bayonne! (We were getting quite proficient at catching Paris Trains!)

Now this is the way to travel! Fast and Comfortable (No comments please Mark!) A stop at Bordeaux for another connection came with a small surprise of sharing a train compartment with a couple from Adelaide on their way to San Sebastian. Some hours later we arrived at a town called Bayonne for a 2Hr stop over before the slow train to St-Jean-Pied-De-Port (SJPDP).

2 Hrs gave us time to find lunch (more croissants! How can one resist when a Chocolate croissant stares you in the face with a price tag of €0.90 saying “eat me”!

Back on the train we finally reach SJPDP, our starting point for the Camino! A very small but picturesque town just like everything we had already seen and read about. No disappointments!

Picked up our official pilgrims passports and explored the township.

Enjoyed the hospitality of Marie Josée and shared both an evening meal and breakfast with 3 Frenchmen enjoying the countryside on motorcycles and a Californian who will also be walking the Camino.

It’s now time to pack the backpacks and take our first real steps on the Camino.

The Journey begins! (or continues?)

Finally the big day arrived

Over nine months of preparation, lots of research, lots of planning, lots of training and lots of shopping, we finally arrive at the big day when our adventure begins? Or did it really begin nine months ago when we both caught hold of the dream in both hands to bring it to reality? Well it has definitely been a fun journey to this point.
Whilst the realisation of nine months of dreaming are now becoming a reality and excitement and anticipation has been building, the day of departure becomes an emotional drain. What with the heart strings pulled to breaking point due to the separation of loved ones (yes we really do love you all very dearly). Whilst we always knew this was going to happen, it always hurts when the time comes.

Fit and Ready

We have been preparing for the Camino for around 9 months now with plenty of walking ( something we have no choice but do, if we plan to walk most of the 780 kms across the northern part of Spain!) Having dogs makes it easier, but on some of our longer walks we’ve been concerned of wearing our dogs out and it takes a day or 2 before they are in the mood for another walk! Whilst we would have liked to have done more long distance walking over this time, this hasn’t happened as walking takes a big chunk of time that we don’t readily have available. However, I set a fitness bench mark for the two of us some months ago to complete the 1000 steps twice with our fully loaded backpacks on. The 1000 steps is in the Dandenongs and is now a very popular spot for all people but particularly fitness freaks where people climb some 400+ meters over 1.5km in a beautiful natural bush setting. Today we completed the circuit twice! So as far as I’m concerned, we are fit and ready to go! 4 sleeps to go!
