Welcome to our Blog created to capture our adventures as we travel across Spain on the Camino de Santiago!
This site is intended to share our experiences with family and friends and anyone else that is interested in following our European holiday with an emphasis on our Camino pilgrimage following the main route of The Camino Francés.
The Camino Francés is the main spine route of the Camino de Santiago. It stretches nearly 800 kilometres from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port near Biarritz in France to Santiago de Compostela in north-west Spain. It has had large numbers of pilgrims travelling to the tomb of St. James (Santiago in Spanish) for at least 800 years.
The Camino Francés can be divided into 3 main sections: the rolling hills of the Basque country, the hot, flat, empty central section of the “meseta”, and the green hills of Galicia. Our pilgimage will attempt to complete the 1st and 3rd sections on foot with the central section being done on bikes.
Married and living in Melbourne, Australia with 2 very independent daughters studying at the University of Melbourne, it was time to finally get the opportunity to travel overseas together, particularly as we will be celebrating our 25th Wedding anniversary!
With our sights set on Europe we were overwhelmed with the prospect of planning a trip as we really had no idea where we wanted to go or what to see. Then (as corny as it might sound) we went and saw the movie “The Way”. We came away completely inspired by the film and the challenge of walking 800Km across Spain with just a backpack. The idea took seed and although there were many doubts we pushed on with our “dream” to the point that airfares and travel arrangements have been made. There is no turning back!
